No Prep Plans: Indigenous Knowledge Systems-Grades 6-8

No Prep Plans: Indigenous Knowledge Systems
Research + Group Project (Indigenous American Knowledge Investigation)
Grades 6-8

For thousands of years, Indigenous peoples across the Americas developed sophisticated systems of agriculture, medicine, astronomy, engineering, and environmental management. Long before modern laboratories, universities, or scientific journals existed, Indigenous communities were carefully observing, testing, adapting, and passing down knowledge that helped societies thrive in diverse environments. In this inquiry-based research and group project, students investigate one Indigenous knowledge system and examine what modern science has learned, or should learn, from it.

Part of the Ancient Mesoamerica Series, this lesson encourages students to explore topics such as Three Sisters agriculture, maize domestication, Indigenous medicine, terra preta soils, Maya astronomy, and Indigenous fire management practices. Students collect evidence, analyze scientific principles, create diagrams, investigate modern recognition, and develop evidence-based conclusions about the value of Indigenous knowledge systems.
